      A Scale Charger

We presented a new concept of charger system named "Scale Charger". This novel charger system visualize some data on mobile device by using the metaphor of typical scale. For instance, When user put his/her mobile device on the charging plate, the battery is recharged wirelessly. As the battery charges, the charging plate goes down as if the device is getting heavier. This new visualization method also contains other data on device such as unread emails, remaining time when playing music, remaining storage or scadule data. Patented. Aimed at Red dot concept award.

New Manipulation Method using Virtual Fingers.

Expanded Mobile Augmented Reality View using Fisheye Distortion.

There have been many studies to minimize the psychological and physical load increase caused by mobile augmented reality systems. In this paper, we propose a new technique called ¡°EXMAR¡±, which enables the user to explore his/her surroundings with an expanded field of view, resulting in a decrease of physical movement. Through this novel interaction technique, the user can explore off-screen point of interests with environmental contextual information by simple dragging gestures. To evaluate this initial approach, we conducted a proof of concept usability test under a set of scenarios such as ¡°Exploring objects behind the user¡±, ¡°Avoiding the invasion of personal space¡± and ¡°Walk and type with front-view.¡± Through this initial examination, we found that users can explore off-screen point of interests and grasp the spatial relations without the increase of mental effort. We believe that this preliminary study gives a meaningful indication that employing the interactive field of view can be a useful method to decrease the physical load without any additional mental efforts in a mixed and augmented reality environment. Patented. Published at ISMAR Poster 2010.

      MASTERS PROJECTS

      Pseudo Pressure Sensitive Touch

Patented. Research is on Going.. Aimed at UIST 2011.

      Multi-touch based Korean Inputting System.
We analysed the character of Korean which could be used in multi-touch interface, and finally proposed a Korean inputting system based on the analysis. The proposed korean inputting system is consist of consonants such as ¤², ¤¸, ¤§, ¤¡, ¤µ, ¤±, ¤¤, ¤·, ¤© and is designed to input not only consonant but also vowel at the same time depending on the starting point of dragging. Moreover, it is designed to input double-consonants when clicking using two fingers, double-vowels such as ¤Á, ¤Å, ¤Ë, ¤Ð or ¤Â, ¤Æ when dragging using two fingers. To resolve the low input resolution of finger, we choose an initial sound at the center point of two fingers to input korean text in an intuitive and rational way. Implemented using Objective-C. Patented. Published at KOREA HCI 2010 as an abstracted form. Aiming at Mobile HCI2011.

Emotional Expression using Pressure Sensitive Keyboard. ( Sponsored by Microsoft Research Center )
We designed Pressure Sensitive Keyboard as an interface not only to type a word but also express user's emotions. The proposed Interface has several visual feedbacks : slapping, punching, kissing, and sleeping. Each visual animations are presented on a specific area of the screen by several input gestures : hitting, stroking and even sleeping on a keyboard. The Hardware, Pressure Sensitive Keyboard is supported by Microsoft Research Center. Implemented using Processing and Pressure Sensitive Keyboard from Microsoft Research. Presented at UIST Student Innovation Contest 2009.

The Haptic Wheel: Vibro-tactile based Navigation for the Driving Environment.
We propose a vibro-tactile based display on a steering wheel named ¡°Haptic Wheel¡±, which is embedded with 32 linear actuators to present tactile information such as ¡°Alert¡±, ¡°Turn left¡± and ¡°Turn right¡±. This information is coded by spatial and temporal patterns, resulting in transferring the information regardless of the holding gesture and the number of hands gripping the steering wheel. This noble interface allows users to get information through the physical contact of the driver¡¯s palm, a part of the body that is free from objects such as clothes or shoes. We conducted an experiment to evaluate three proposed stimuli modes comparing two and one handed use. This study gives a meaningful indication that employing the tactile display on the steering wheel may give directional information to the driver. Implemented using Arduino MEGA, C++ with OpenGL and Processing. Patented. Published at PerCom Workshop on SmartE 2010.

One-Handed Multi-touch Emulation Technique on Small Devices.
We present VirtualThumb, a set of software-based conceptual techniques that enables a user to handle multi-touch operations under the limited physical resources available. This simple and novel technique allows users to comfortably handle multi-touch pinching gestures such as zooming, scaling, and rotating using only one finger. Hence, occlusions caused by two fingers are reduced by half, gestures are not restricted by the physical boundaries of the screen, and physical limitations of the user's fingers are reduced. We implemented three versions such as iPad, iPhone, Window mobile and Windows 7. Internationally Patented. Published at UIST 2009.

      Biolin: a Current-based Musical Interface.
We describe a media artwork that features the Biolin, a musical device that produces different sounds depending on the target object that it is being played on. Shaped like an ordinary violin bow, the Biolin analyzes the target using a weak electric current to produce a timbre that matches the target. The user can then perform by ¡°playing¡± the target object using the Biolin. The Biolin was designed by modifying a violin bow in order to make it conductive and connected to a computer for the transmission of data, resulting in visual and auditory output. We showcased Biolin in front of a small audience, in which the users showed positive reactions to the new approach of making sounds from everyday objects and people around us. Implemented using Arduino, SoundFont and MAX/MSP. Published at ACE 2009.

      A Current-based Interactive Plant.
We propose a new method for interacting with both organisms and objects, using the change in current when a user conducts a gesture on the target of interaction, ultimately widening the spectrum of the object¡¯s reaction based on the user¡¯s behavior. For our installation, we used a plant as the main target of interaction. Implemented using Arduino and Processing. Internationally Patented. Published at SIGGRAPH ASIA 2009 Poster and IDC 2010 Short paper session.

AR Speech bubble: Towards Communicative Augmented reality.
In the field of mobile augmented reality, a combination of mobile computing technology and AR, there has been many approaches from entertainment to educational. However, existing mobile AR applications have yet to implement AR technology as a communication tool despite our natural desire for self-expression. In this paper, we present a customizable AR Speech Bubble, in which users are able to freely express themselves in the form of text or emoticons under the mobile AR environment. Implemented using C++ with AR Tag and OpenGL, MAX/MSP and Python. Course Project.

      CySearch: Visualization of my friends.
This visualization shows the relationships of my friends in cyworld. Links between nodes represents relations and nodes represents friends. Searching, Ordering, folding, linking and changing depth functions are implemented. Implemented using Python with graph library. Just For Fun.

      UbiPlay: You be a Player.
UbiPlay is an entertainment system using mobile phone. The goal of this project is to allow players to experience massive face-to-face interaction. To reduce entry barriers of participation, it enables players to use their own mobile phone as an input interface by using an audio response system. Two games "YoungCha!" and "Hankanoid" are developed as parts of this project. Lab Project. Demonstrated at ACE2008 and published as an extended abstract.
